Mrs. Marshall worked her whole life
Her work was never done
She finally paid her house off
And left it to her only son
And they lived there together
Til Joe came home one day
And found her in the kitchen
The kettle whistling away

And she never, never even
Never even said, "Goodbye"
She never, never even

But then Joe lost the house
His mother slaved to save
He didn't pay the tax
She must be twisting in her grave
We all tried to help him
But he just left one day
And the house was shut and boarded up
And that's the way it stayed

And he never, never even
Never even said, "Goodbye"
He never, never even

Then a rich, white yuppie couple
They bought it for a smirk
They rolled up their sleeves
And they got right to work
And while building up their dream house
They tore their marriage down
The house went on the market
A high price for this side of town

And they never, never even
Never even said, "Goodbye"
They never, never even

There was an open house
And we all went to see
But there was nothing left of anything
The old place used to be
No shapes among the shadows
No feeling in the air
No corner left uncovered
No secret sleeping there
No whisper at the window
No step upon the stair

And you never, never even
Never get to say, "Goodbye"
You never, never even...
Goodbye.
